What is the best long term offense I should have for a protoss in starcraft?

Me and my friends play starcraft a lot and I want to beat that kid that is so cocky. I want to know what is the best long term offense (Like an hour into the game) for a protoss. I used to just build a fleet of carrier but they aren't as invinsible as i thought they were and i am starting to doubt if they are worth building. For example, they can be easily stopped or killed with lock down (terran), psionic lightining (Protoss), or scourges and plague (Zerg). So any ideas?

1. it all depends on what race your opponent is. It also depends on what units your opponent is making. so the best long term offense varies all the time. Go to Teamliquid.net and check out their liquidpedia site for strategies and counters. they are very helpful. http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft/Protoss_Strategy but these strategies are not auto-win. they require practice and compensation for things that do not go according to plan.
